The Absolutely Not a Guide to Marketing an Indie Project.
Seriously, how would you do it?
So, you've built a product, or you're thinking of building one... how the heck are you going to market it? Like it or not, this is something we really have to figure out.
This isn't a how-to, it's the opposite. I am looking for a how-to. Seriously, all thoughts are welcome. Some things are off the table, though.
- Anything that costs a lot of money.
Okay, that takes a lot off the table. Why not approach it like I would any development problem? I guess the first step is to define what the problem is. One way I could define it is I have a product that can help job seekers. The problem is they do not know it exists. Further, if they do know it exists, they may not trust it. That's defined good enough for now.
So far, here is my proposed solution. I have already planned this out some, but I am seeing where tweaks need to be made. How about a short podcast? Let's pretend you are a job seeker. Okay, great. You have need exposure so people can see you. Neufee needs the same thing! Why not make this symbiotic?
You build yourself some resumes with Neufee. Pick your favorite project to show off and come on the podcast. I organize the questions beforehand so you can practice. Symbiotic, remember? It's just as important for you to look good as it is for Neufee. You show off your project, then we talk about how you broke it down for a resume using Neufee. Afterward, the audience can leave comments to better improve your breakdown.
You have content to share; Neufee has content to share. In my mind, this is wins all around. This isn't some "trust me, bro" advertisement. These are real people showing off what they made and how they used Neufee. Feature requests, bugs, etc., are fully expected. That will only help build Neufee into a stronger app that really delivers!
Here lies a problem, though. You would think job seekers blasting resumes out would be throwing themselves at the opportunity. They are not. Over the next so long (day job takes priority), I plan to build some additions to Neufee. A place where you can check out the podcast, learn about the questions, and even book a spot on the calendar. The goal is to make it as easy as possible. Heck, maybe I could even make it asynchronous! That's a heck of an idea right there!
I'd love to hear some ideas outside of mine on how to market a product without breaking the bank. I'd also love for you to follow along on this journey of mine. Who knows, this could be reference material when you get that great idea!
